Skull Cap for your Skull - tutorial

Try explaining what a skull is to your four year old. Then try explaining to her why her hat is called a beret and why her brother's is called a skull cap. Since we made Sweet Pea a recycled sweater hat to match her button scarf , we figured we better make one for Jojo too.

Making this hat was super duper easy. Like, 10 minutes and done easy. Helped that I had a cooperative turtleneck sweater, a huge coloring book to keep Sweet Pea occupied and a sleeping Jojo.

1. Start with an old turtle neck sweater. It has to have a big wide, stretchy neck.
2. Cut off the neck!

3. Figure out how long you want the crown and the straight part to be. Mine were about four inches each. Make a mark in the center. And a line to separate the crown from the straight part. (wow, bad wording. does that make any sense??)
4. Cut the two sides of the hat into humps like this. Mine really should look more like a football shape, but this is what we got. Be sure to cut through both layers of the neck.
5. Sew the sides of each hump together to a point & put it on your skull.
6. HOpe that you have a model more cooperative than mine. :)

And don't forget to vote for my other recycled sweater hat over at Fireflies and Jellybeans.

  1. My son LOVES hats like this. I tried making one last year that turned out okay, but didn't think to make the points like that. That would make it fit so much better! I will have to make one for him for Christmas.
